Spicy Curried Crabs

These are mud crabs, slightly greenish, blackish in colour and meaty, when compared to the flower crab.Normally, I like female crabs because they have roes which taste really nice when mixed into the gravy.

To make a delicious curried crab dish, you just need a little bit of everyday ingredients, passion and a good mood. And you get a wonderful dish at a fraction of the price, you pay in restaurants.
Let me give you a word of caution, this dish is extremely spicy, so it is not for the faint heart. I don't really have a standard recipe for it. I just follow my mood for the day.
Sadly, my husband got the male crabs, for RM35/kg, so that is one down...but they crabs were huge and meaty.

(A) For frying : Curry leaves, cinnamon and cloves, onions and garlic-ginger paste
(B) Ground Chilly Paste & Chilly Powder
(C) Serai
(D) Blend together - 2 tomatoes, chilly padi, 4 onions and coconut into a paste. Add water if needed.
(E) Crabs
(D) Toast rice grains and blend into powder.

Step 1 : Fry ingredients A until fragrant
Step 2 : Add ingredient B until you see the oil . Then add serai.
Step 3 : Add the crabs and let them cook for a while.
Step 4 : Add ingredients D now, and let the crabs cook well.
Taste every now and then and salt accordingly.
Step 5 : Add E and stir through.
Cook until the consistency that you want. If you would like more gravy, then don't cook it too long.
Lastly, add some coriander leaves for garnish...

This is a very tasty dish, best eaten with white rice, steaming hot. For drinkers, a mug of beer and this dish would be heaven, but we are no drinkers.

Normally,  we find it difficult to savour crab dishes at seafood restaurants because it is really messy and disgusting to be seen  licking those fingers covered with the yummy sauce .Anyway, I can cook an equally evil dish at home, and all of us get to enjoy it any way we like it. Mess up the table, mess up your hands...why not mess up your face...but make sure you enjoy it to your fullest !!!
