Penang Hawker Food- Coffee Shop on Penang Road

A couple of weeks back,  we all went back to Penang for a short trip. Our palates were, by then deprived of good, tasty food, and in an attempt to devour the best of Penag food, we stopped by Penang Road.
All Penangites know about the famous Penang Road Cendol, and the shop next to it (a corner shop) serves one the best Ais Kacang too. No need for me to rave about the Cendol, so just enjoy the pic. The size of the red bean says it all. I have never seen such huge beans in any other state. Just the right amount of coconut milk and gula melaka, makse it a perfect tasting dessert.

To satisfy our sweet tooth, we had to order their famous Ice Kacang. Shaved ice, drizzled with generous amount of evaporated milk, red and gula melaka syrup. Large serving of attap chee (palm seed), red beans, sweetcorn, grass jelly, balls of coloured agar-agar form the base. For an upgrade, top up with ice-cream and a beautiful jelly ( sorry not in the picture because my son gobbled it). We also ordered Lor Bak, Char Koay Teow and Penang Laksa. Lor Bak is a mixture of snack that you can select, and it will be deep fried (sinfully good) until crispy and golden brown. It is served with 2 types of sauce, a sweet chilly sauce and a sticky starchy sauce. We chose the lobak, of course, which is basically meat roll wrapped in beancurd skin, crispy prawn fritters, fried tauhu (tofu), crunchy on the outside, soft inside and the Chinese sausage. I am hundred percent sure, that Lor Bak cannot get any better outside of Penang.
A visit to Penang would never be complete without its classic hawker food- Penang CKT.  It should comprise of succulent prawns, beans sprout, cockles and the chinese sausage, and the koay teow has to be slightly charred. Otherwise, it is not the Penang signature dish. Can you beat the picture below ?
Last but least of the pack, the one and only Penang Laksa. Now this is the real stuff, a good dollop of thick har kow (Fermented Shrimp Paste) adds the zing to the Laksa. The laksa sauce is super thick, filled with fish paste, extremely yummy, to the last drop. This is one unique Penang dish. Adding to the texture of this dish, are the crunchy cucumber slices and tangy pineapple.

So people, to sum it up, this is what we had, which definitely satisfied our taste buds.
