The Spirit of Varanasi-India.

Varanasi, India's holiest city, the perfect place of the existence of contradiction-the ancient and the modern, the mystical and the mundane, and of course, life and death. I was in Varanasi in April' 11, the place where souls attain "moksha". I stayed in Hotel Zeeras, and surprisingly I never expected such nice hotel in the midst of this town.

Day 1
If there is one thing, you must not miss in Varanasi, it is the evening Aarti at Dashawamedh ghat. As the sun goes down, everyday for about twenty minutes, the ghats of Varanasi comes to a standstill even as hundreds gather there for the high point of the day.A spectacular flawless choreographed prayers service is coducted, incantations to the river goddess, Mother Gangga, songs, several tiered Aarti stands, comch shells, temple bells and more, you will find yourself either grip by an inexplicable religious fervour, or simply mesmerised by the sheers noise and atmosphere that goes right down your soul. It was loud, it was grand, and at the same time, surreal.

After Aarti,  I decided to do some shopping at the Chowk, whic is suppossedd to be the best wholesale market for Benarasi sarees.

Day 2
The next day, I made my way to witness the sunrise at the ghats. One should never miss the start of the day at the ghats. I sat on the steps on one of the ghats and watched the sun gradually start bobbing up in the horizon from behind the Ganges.Golden rays shone onto the ghats against the backdrop of numerous pilgrim taking their bath. After a divine dip in Ganga, I too made my way to Kasi Visvanath Temple, one of the India holiest temple.

Another significat place to visit, is Sarnath, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon.Serene, scenic and and atmosphere of divinity welcomes you as you step into Sarnath.

In sum, 48 hours in Varanasi, an experience of a lifetime. The holy dip, the beautiful silk and the world renowned aarti, the city that captivates to  one's core...
